Bridgette Mayer Gallery announces its first exhibition of 2013:
A solo show by artist Shelley Spector will be on view January 30 to
February 23, 2013, with an opening reception Friday, February 1, 6:00 – 8:30 PM.

Bridgette Mayer Gallery is pleased to announce its first solo exhibition of work by renowned local artist, Shelley Spector. But Not As Much As Tomorrow will be on view from January 30 to February 23, 2013, with an opening reception Friday, February 1, from 6:00 - 8:30 pm. The exhibition will feature a variety of new work as well as site specific installations in the North Gallery and Vault Room.

The wide range of work in Spector’s upcoming show includes her iconic print series, Five And A Half By Forty. This collection of twenty-eight prints will be shown in its entirety for the first time since she began the series twenty years ago. Also on view, two and three dimensional works made of mostly reclaimed and recycled materials such as wood, paper, paint, metal and vintage upholstery passed down through the artist’s family. “Mariposa,” a deconstructed blanket comprised of makeshift spindles and vibrant red thread, will be installed on the floor in the North Gallery.

Acting as part artist, part anthropologist, and part mad-scientist, Spector deconstructs everyday objects and reassembles them to addresses shared experiences, both common and complex. As physical layers are built into her work during her labor-intensive processes of stacking, patterning and winding, deeper layers of meaning are brought to the surface. Common themes of interpersonal relationships, physical environments and finances are prevalent in Spector’s work, for according to the artist, “they are part of most people’s everyday and for the most part, they are unavoidable.”

Spector’s work has been exhibited at Philadelphia Museum of Art, Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia Museum of Jewish Art and in a Fleisher Art Memorial Challenge Exhibition, all in Philadelphia. Her work is part of many public and private collections which include The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Philadelphia Museum of Jewish Art; Human Rights Campaign, Washington, DC and HBO Inc. New York, NY. In 2012 Spector was the Artist in Residence at NextFab Studio through a Breadboard Fellowship. She has received grants from the Independence Foundation Fellowship in the Arts and Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. In 1999, she founded SPECTOR Gallery/Projects, a program designed to showcase local talent and emerging ideas. Spector has a BFA in sculpture from University of the Arts and teaches at Tyler School of Art, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and University of the Arts.
